Joe Fagin was an artist born in New Orleans, Louisiana but spent the majority of his life in Brooklyn, NY, eventually retiring out east on Long Island in the Hamptons. His interests were endless but when he was at his workbench he was usually carving things out of wood. He knew something about everything and only spoke when he had something either brilliant or hilarious to contribute. He loved my grandmother, Haydee more than anything on this planet. When she got dementia, she would sit in the same spot for hours staring out a window, so he planted a rose garden out that window to face back at her. He enriched all who crossed his path with his kindness and gentle nature; his love of art, nature, good food and family. I can't say enough good things about this human, he is the reason I see the world the way that I do- which happens to be my favorite thing about myself. My fondest memories of childhood were going on long walks "adventures" on the railroad tracks with him in Queens, NY eating ripe blackberries off the vine or hikes through the Pine Barrens in the Hamptons when we moved out there; going to museums with him in NYC; harvesting sugar snap peas and drying out sunflower seeds from his garden with him; and sitting around a big table with the family as he cooked delicious red beans and rice and other recipes from his days as a cook in the Navy. When he died, the only thing I took from his house as they were clearing it out, were his carving tools. In that dusty tackle box was an old cardboard box with waxes he had hand carved but never cast. This wax carving was among them. I hope you love this ring as much as I do, although I doubt that's possible. But I hope when you wear it, you are embodied by Granpa Joe's rich love for life.
